From 1787 to 1868, more than 165,000 convicts were transported from Britain to Australia. Most never returned. This first-hand account from a convict is one of the few examples of escape.  Philosopher and reformer Jeremy Bentham acquired the written account of James Martin. UCL inherited Bentham's papers after his death, including Martin's Memorandoms, which are now transcribed and published online for the first time with full annotations: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Bentham-Project/publications/martins-memorandoms/martins-memorandoms.html  For a better audio experience, use headphones.
